How to Start a Drawing with Confidence
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Where do you start when drawing a scene?
In this video, I share how (and why!) I often begin with my feet. They create a helpful frame and make it easier to build the rest of the drawing step by step.
I’ll show you how starting with a simple subject like your feet can help you build confidence and structure your sketch. You'll see my full process as I draw a corner of my studio, starting from the foreground and slowly building up the background, step by step. And share useful tips along the way to help you measure shapes and create depth.
Materials used in this video:
Hahnemühle Nostalgie sketchbook, size A4
Sailor DeMannen fountain pen (fude nib 55 degree angle) with water soluble ink with water soluble ink
Pentel Aquash waterbrush
Your assignment for this week: Frame your focus
Pick a scene around you. Could be your desk, a cafe corner, whatever is available.
Start with the foreground, draw an object that's close to you to create a visual frame and then build the background, just shape by shape, by observation.
Add color or even just a wash, only to the background.
See what happens, have fun.
