A Single Line Can Capture More Than You Think
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
A single, unbroken line can capture the essence of any subject. Every time I use the continuous line technique, I am amazed, surprised, and intrigued. It never gets old.
The continuous line technique: by keeping your pen on the paper the whole time, you train your eye to notice angles, relationships, and depth.
You’re no longer relying on traditional perspective rules or drawing what you think you know. Instead, you trust your eyes and draw what you truly see.
I love how a continuous line creates movement and energy. It makes the pages feel more organic and alive.
In this video, I show you the technique. And then: try it out yourself too!
Using a small still life (just a collection of everyday objects in my studio), I guide you step by step through the process.
Materials I used:
A4 sketchbook (unknown brand)
Sailor DeMannen Fude nib fountain pen, 55-degree nib angle
I know, some people really dislike this method. Others find the idea of never lifting the pen intimidating. Try it anyway.
The result be wonky, that's pretty much guaranteed. And that’s exactly the point. It’s part of the process and part of the fun. It helps you let go of the pressure to create a “perfect” drawing every time (an impossible standard anyway).
The more you practice, the more smoothly your hand will follow your eye, and the more accurate your proportions will become. If you try the exercise, let me know in the comments what you noticed about your own observation habits.
