Urban Sketching in Paris
Bonjour from Paris! And welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday.
In October, I filmed an urban sketching session in the streets in Paris.
I started loose with color first, to start right away and not get intimidated by the blank page, then layered my lines, and made decisions as the drawing grew.
My main subject was the metro entrance, but the surrounding street, people, trees, and the city busy-ness all became part of the story.
I think you'll like this video - it has tips for urban sketching, including drawing people, proportions, decision making, and even how to draw lettering in your sketchbook without needing to write it perfectly.
Materials used in this video:
Daniel Smith Watercolors
Pentel Aquash waterbrush, broad
Derwent Inktense pencil, black (watersoluble)
I loved sitting on the street here and letting this page unfold. I hope this inspires you to go out and make a page today too.
If you'd like an assignment this week:
Go outside and draw a place that catches your eye.
Start with color first before any lines. Try to make loose shapes and impressions.
Then build your drawing on top of it. Choose one clear main subject in the scene and make decisions around that.
Keep it playful and trust the process.
This is such a great reminder that your sketchbook can surprise you. You never know what your drawing will look like until you make the first marks. Trust the process and enjoy the moment.
