Two Sketches in 10 Minutes
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
What if you only had 10 minutes to draw?
10 Minutes is all I gave myself in this episode of Draw Tip Tuesday. With a hot cortado coffee as both inspiration and fuel, I made not one but two sketches in under 10 minutes. This video is all about keeping things simple, fun, and creative. No pressure, no perfection.
I’ll show you two different approaches to sketching the same subject. First, a quick line drawing with watercolor added after. Then I reverse the process and start with bold watercolor shapes before adding lines. These two methods lead to completely different results, and both are great ways to loosen up and explore your sketching style.
Along the way, I talk about letting go of accuracy, working quickly, and embracing the little wonky bits that make a sketch come alive. I also share what materials I’m using, how I think while I sketch, and why speed sketching like this is such a good practice.
Materials used in this video:
Faber-Castell Pitt oil based pencil, extra soft
Daniel Smith Watercolors
Derwent Intense colored pencil, black
White crayon (Caran d'Ache Neocolor I)
Your assignment this week:
Make yourself a nice drink, sit down with your sketchbook, and draw it twice:
First, do a line drawing and add color
Then, paint it first and add your line after
Try it out and notice what changes. You might even discover a new favorite way to draw.
Let me know how it goes!
