Urban Sketching with Just 3 Colors
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Drawing on location is all about play, process, and trust.
In today’s video, I take you along as I sketch outside with just a few simple tools. By limiting materials, you give yourself freedom to play, keep things loose, and trust your inner artist.
I start with messy marks in color, layer shapes, and then bring in crisp pen lines when the page is ready for it.
I share pro tips for drawing in public, for staying mindful of your stuff when you’re outside sketching, and for letting go of perfection.
It is not about making a perfect picture, but about capturing a moment in your own unique way.
Materials I used:
Strathmore Mixed Media sketchbook
Neocolor watersoluble crayons (Moss Green, Salmon Pink, Payne’s Grey)
Fountain pen
Water brush
Your assignment:
Pick just two or three colors (plus a pen if you like) and set a simple intention for your page.
It could be “have fun,” “focus on roofs,” or “play with messy marks.” Capture your subject loosely, without worrying about perfection.
If things look wonky or messy, that is part of the fun. Just keep going.
