Stop Overpacking Your Sketch Bag

Stop Overpacking Your Sketch Bag

There's something really freeing about heading out with just a few tools in your pocket. No heavy bag, no staring into a pencil case wondering where to start, just you and a sketchbook.

In this week's video I share how I approach minimal sketch kits, and I've included some examples from a recent hiking trip.

Make it work

On one hike during that recent trip, I forgot my waterbrush. Instead of just putting everything away, I grabbed a tissue, wet it, and used that to move paint around on the page.
It was a bit messy but worked really well and I loved the result. Happy accidents are real.

Less decisions on the go

Going minimal also means making your choices before you leave the house. You can take just a single pen, two contrasting colored pencils, or bundle together a handful of your most-used colored pencil stubs.

These limitations actually make things easier and more fun, because all your decisions are already made before you even sit down to draw. It also teaches you a lot about your own preferences and style.

Watersoluble tools?

For a long time I didn't see the added value of watersoluble tools when you already have watercolors and pencils. Then I actually tried good quality ones like Caran d'Ache Neocolor II crayons and Derwent Inktense pencils, and I feel completely different about them. I love the vibrant colors, and versatility, and they're easy to carry.

Your assignment: The Minimal Kit Challenge

  • Pick a maximum of 5 tools from what you already own and head out for a sketch session.

  • Use that same kit for at least a couple of sessions.

  • Notice how working within limits affects your decisions, your style, and how you feel while drawing.

A few ideas to get you started:

  • Two contrasting colored pencils

  • One pen or pencil, black and white only (watersoluble means you can add water for extra effect)

  • A couple of watersoluble crayons or pencils

  • A handful of colored pencil stubs that fit in your pocket

Have fun with it!

Materials mentioned:
