The best sketchbook habit: showing up
If you've been meaning to sketch more but keep putting it off, you’ll love this. Here are five tips that might just change how you think about your practice.
1. Limit your palette (seriously, try it)
Fewer colors can be more fun! For this drawing below, I chose only two colors from my watercolor palette: Transparent Pyrrol Orange and Ultramarine Blue. Combining them gave me a wonderful range of browns and grays between the two bright colors straight from the pan.
I didn't even miss having an additional color!
2. Be early, bring your sketchbook
A trip to the theater turned into an impromptu people-watching session. Drinks, good conversation, and a sketchbook filling up as the audience trickled in -- all before the show even started. Waiting time is sketching time. Always have your kit with you.
3. Stack your habits
In my book I wrote about "stacking habits" to make it easier to keep a regular sketching practice. Combining drawing with everyday moments is something you can totally do too. How? Watch today's Draw Tip Tuesday video.
4. Join Sketchbook Revival. It's free!
April 11-21: Over 300 art teachers, thousands of creatives worldwide, 11 days of drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, journaling and more. Follow one session or all of them, at your own pace, from wherever you are.
I'll be teaching one of the sessions too, and it's going to be so much fun. Did I mention it's totally free?
