Summer Sketching Tips and Travel Drawing Ideas
Spring became summer (at least on my side of the world), and with that comes a welcome shift in rhythm. Whether you’re packing your bags, staying close to home, or simply adjusting to longer days and looser routines, this season brings fresh opportunities to draw. And sometimes, a few challenges too.
Sketching on the go? Don’t forget your sketchbook.
Travel is exciting, but it often means you’re out of your usual routine. You’re spending time with others, navigating new places, and somehow your sketchbook stays zipped up in your bag.
This month on Patreon, I shared a little guide on how to make time for drawing while traveling — even when you're surrounded by distractions or companions. It’s filled with helpful reminders to stay connected to your sketchbook (and to yourself).

Packing tip: Keep it light.
Choosing what to bring on a creative trip can be tricky. You want to pack light, but still have your favorite tools on hand. I wrote a blog post with my go-to Must-Have Travel Sketching Supplies to help you find that balance.

Not traveling? Take yourself on a little field trip.
Last weekend, I went to the weekly market in town with my sketchbook and a coffee. I sat in the square, people-watched, eavesdropped a little (sketcher’s license!), and ended up chatting with a few curious onlookers. It was one of those small but magical drawing moments that remind me why I do this.
Or… travel without leaving home.
In my recent live Mini-Workshop, we used Google Street View to draw a complex scene from somewhere far away. The key was not to draw everything, but to capture the vibe. Participants created such wonderful, expressive pieces.

Lately, I’m craving creativity without a purpose.
I almost dove into a big project this month. But then I realized what I actually need is play. So now I’m letting myself explore for the sake of it. Collage, painting, cooking, maybe even pottery, who knows. Anything that makes me feel curious and free. No deadlines. No pressure. Just creative joy.
And… something new might be coming.
I’ve been thinking about creating an online course based on my book Life Is Better When You Draw (It). If that sounds like something you’d love to be part of, sign up for the interest list:

Workshop update!
The Spain art retreat in September is now sold out! I'm so excited to teach a full group at the Costa Brava with The Blue Walk.
Next up: Paris!
In October, I’ll be teaching in one of my favorite cities, and it’s always magical to sketch there. I’m co-teaching with Cynthia Morris and Marcus McAllister, and we’ll be guiding a group of artists (all levels welcome!) through a week of creativity, inspiration, and exploration.
🎨 Curious about joining? There are still spots available.

Wherever you are, I hope you make a little space to draw this month.
Even a few minutes with your sketchbook can spark joy and shift your perspective. Whether you’re traveling, staying put, or trying something new. Draw for you.
