The Sketcher's Guide to Traveling With Non-Sketchers
What if your sketchbook was the best souvenir you ever brought home? Not a fridge magnet, not a blurry selfie. Pages you actually filled while sitting somewhere wonderful.
When you draw a place, you really see it. You slow down, you look, you take it all in, and you remember so much more.
But what do you do about the people traveling with you? Keeping them waiting while you sketch could feel awkward.
Let's unpack that, because it's very solvable. And once you sort it out, sketching time often becomes the most relaxed part of the whole trip.
Remember: you don't need hours.
A quick sketch at breakfast on a terrace, a few minutes before bed, it all adds up. If you don't finish, take a photo for reference and complete it later, in your hotel room, on the flight home or even once you're back.
And even if you don't return to these pages: unfinished drawings are still great memories, and they capture so much more than any photo ever could.
Of course you could also choose to travel with people who just get it.
My drawing workshop trips are exactly that. Everyone's got a sketchbook, nobody's rushing you, and we all geek out over sketch gear.
Drawing isn't something you fit in around the trip. It is the trip. Check out my workshop schedule here.

Drawing your travels captures something no photo ever could.
(And I say all this as a former professional photographer!)
