Hi there, I’m Koosje!

No Setup, No Stress

No Setup, No Stress

You don't need a big setup or a lot of time to make a drawing you're happy with. For this Draw Tip Tuesday video, I picked a few pieces of fruit straight from the fruit bowl, put them on a napkin, and that was my still life sorted. Simple as that, no overthinking.

You can follow the process, and along the way I share tips on things like why having a ready-to-go sketching kit makes such a difference, how to handle a wobbly line without making it worse, and how to use color to create focus and depth in your drawing. And there's an assignment for you to try yourself.

The background stays uncolored, which is one of the things that gives the finished piece that sense of depth, and story. Without a lot of extra work.

One thing I love about this kind of sketch is how quickly it comes together. No overthinking the subject, no fussing over materials, just drawing what's in front of you.

All tips from the video listed:

  1. Keep a standard sketching kit ready to go so there are no excuses

  2. Don't overthink your subject, everything is interesting when you draw it

  3. Keep going, keep the pen moving, make the drawing grow

  4. Don't plan too much in advance, let the drawing unfold shape by shape

  5. Color attracts the viewer's eye, so place it where you want the focus

  6. Follow the curve of the shape with your brush lines and don't fuss or correct

  7. Leave the whites of the paper for highlights

  8. Add a few extra bits as a layer on top for more depth and life

  9. Add colored pencils on top of watercolor for extra texture and depth

Materials used:

  • Hahnemühle watercolor sketchbook (A6)

  • Uniball rollerball pen (waterproof black ink)

  • Watercolors

  • Water brush pen
