Draw Anything With Negative Space
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
We all have those things we’re “bad at” in our sketchbook practice.
My weak spot is drawing animals. So I joined a fun online workshop with illustrator Emma Carlisle (via London Drawing Group) to practice cats. Lots of cats. And I'm not even a cat person!
In this Draw Tip Tuesday, I’ll walk you through a simple way to draw animals by focusing on negative space (= the shapes around your subject), so you can capture them without stressing about accuracy.
You’ll see my practice pages (including the cringe-worthy ones I didn’t hide) and follow along as I draw a cat in my sketchbook.
Even if animals aren’t your thing*, this technique works for all kinds of subjects.
Drawing Pro Tip:
As soon as you start fussing, focusing on tiny details, or "fixing" lines and bits: stop. If you don't, you will overwork the drawing.
Keep it fresh, and feel the joy about the time you spent filling a sketchbook page.
*If you'd rather learn how to draw people, join my live online workshops in November: How To Draw People (Level 1) and How To Draw More People (Level 2).
