4 Self Portraits in 10 Minutes

4 Self Portraits in 10 Minutes

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!

Have you ever tried drawing your face really fast?

I discovered how much fun it is to make 4 self portraits in less than 10 minutes, and I'm sharing it in this week's video. I came across the idea in a book by Selwyn Leamy, and it is all about simplifying your lines and focusing on what really matters in a drawing.

In the video, I use a mirror and set a timer to make 4 quick self portraits. Each time, I try to use fewer lines than before. Working this way makes you think about which lines are truly needed to describe the face, and how much you can leave out while still showing expression and resemblance. It is a fun, pressure-free way to sharpen your observation skills.

Your assignment this week:

  • Grab a mirror and set your timer for 2 minutes.

  • Draw your face 4 times, each time setting the timer for 2 minutes.

  • With each drawing, use fewer lines than the last. If you're done before the timer goes off, stop - don't keep fussing.

  • See how much you can simplify and still capture what is important.

The whole exercise will take only 8 minutes.

Materials I used in this video:

  • Handbook journal 8.25" x 5.5"

  • Pentel Pocket Brushpen (with waterproof ink cartridge that comes with the pen)
