How to Draw Transparency

How to Draw Transparency

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!

How do you draw transparency? This is a question that came from the Patreon community here.

Ummm, well.... I am not sure either so in today's video I explore that question by drawing a simple glass jar from observation.

I don't start with a clear answer. I start with curiosity. And isn't that what makes drawing so fun and exciting?

Instead of trying to have all the answers in advance, slow down. Really looking helps you understand glass and transparency. Distortions, reflections, highlights, shadows and how leaving parts of the paper white can all help you suggest transparency.
Because I'm not done exploring yet, I draw the same subject twice with different tools to see what changes and what stays the same.
This is not about tricks or perfect results. It is about observing, experimenting and learning by doing.

If you ever catch yourself thinking "how could I draw this?", that is your cue. Pick up your sketchbook and explore.

Materials used

  • Letterwish Sketchbook

  • Faber-Castell PITT oil based pencil, Extra Soft

  • Derwent Inktense water soluble pencil

  • Pentel Aquash waterbrush

Want an assignment this week? Find it on my Patreon page.

Tips

  • Look for distortions in the glass

  • Leave small white highlights untouched

  • Add just enough dark to suggest depth

  • Keep it loose and embrace the wonkiness

Have fun experimenting!
